Many people have a hard time trusting private loan lenders—and with good reason. There are countless stories circulating on the Internet and in the news about scams and rip-offs directed towards college-aged students. While some may skate on thin ice by offering extreme interest rates, they are really not doing anything illegal, especially once you sign the agreement.
On the other hand, there are some that are running completely fraudulent businesses by taking personal information over the phone for identity theft. Everything above is not said to defer you from taking out private loans, but instead to educate you to not rush in to any kind of deal. And if you’re a parent, there are some great, safe options available to you—and you are in especially good hands with SunTrust Bank.
One of their loans is called the “Academic Answer.” There are very few requirements for this loan, and it may in fact be the “answer” to you impending college student’s education. As a co-signer, you need to make sure that you do not have any serious problems or items on your credit check/credit report. SunTrust will also check to make sure you are currently not piled with debt, and that you have at least three years (36 months) of credit history. They want to make sure that you are able to meet your credit and financial obligations (such as making your bill payments on time), and that your employment history is steady enough to meet your current debt obligations on a sufficient income.
If you decide that this is the right option for your situation—whether you are co-signing for your son or your best friend’s child—you can take advantage of the fact that you can potentially be released from the loan. After the borrower is able to prove the first 48 principal and interest payments on time and prove their own creditworthiness, then you are off the hook.
If you are interesting in applying to be a co-signer for the Academic Answer program, the process is fairly simply. The application should only take you about 15 minutes. Just make sure you have the impending student’s Social Security number handy so you can access the form.
Please note that SunTrust encourages its customers to check out the other potential financing opportunities that may be available to you—whether it’s scholarships, grants, or federal loans, SunTrust wants to keep your private loans to a minimum so you can keep your pocketbook to a maximum.
